Seismic Design of Structures to Eurocode 8

Overview

This two and a half day course is aimed at professional civil engineers interested in the seismic design of buildings, bridges and nuclear structures. It consists of a total of 11 lectures and covers the basics of structural dynamics and engineering seismology, which are necessary for understanding the background of seismic design provisions of modern codes. There are also a number of advanced topics, including seismic design of ‘non-building’ structures and performance-based design. People having attended the course will be able to apply Eurocode 8 to the seismic design of buildings, bridges and nuclear structures.

The Early Bird rate of £575 ends 30th June 2016. Standard rate of £675 thereafter.

Although the fundamentals of the dynamic response of structures to earthquakes will be covered in the course, a basic knowledge of Structural Analysis (material covered in most 3-year undergraduate programmes in the UK) is assumed for those wishing to attend the course.

About the tutors

The course tutors are Prof Andreas J Kappos, Dr Agathoklis Giaralis, Prof Ashraf Ayoub, Prof Cedric D’Mello and Dr Feng Fu - all from the School of Mathematics, Computer Science & Engineering at City University London.

All tutors are experts in Earthquake Engineering, Structural Dynamics and Seismic Design of Structures, and have published extensively in the field.

The course coordinator was a member of the project team that prepared the final draft of Part 1 of the Code, as well as the team that currently drafts the new Eurocode 8 Part 3. He is the Chairman of the BSI Committee B/525/8 Working Groups for Eurocode 8 Parts 2 and 3, as well as a member of the B/525/8 Committee. He also has experience in teaching Eurocode 8 related courses in the UK, Greece and The Netherlands.
