Investigating Japan's Recovery after the 2011 Tohoku Earthquake and Tsunami

Synopsis

An EEFIT team of 11 members lead by Antonios Pomonis spent 6 days in Japan’s Tohoku region (1-6 June 2013) investigating the recovery two years after the tremendous earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. The team worked closely with Tohoku University’s International Research Institute of Disaster Science and other Japanese colleagues to plan and execute the mission. The team visited 6 towns devastated by the tsunami and held interviews with local authorities, NGOs, people directly involved in reconstruction and recovery projects, academics and research institutions to learn about the challenges and plans that are currently being designed, executed or are in public consultation phase. In addition visits to the Onagawa and Hamaoka nuclear power plants as well as two dams were also made. The team will report on the tremendous challenges lying ahead, related to tsunami protection, reconstruction and rehousing, urban planning and issues of nuclear safety.
