Synopsis

The Mw 7.8, Gorkha earthquake of 25th April 2015 resulted in the deaths of more than 7,500 people and caused widespread damage to buildings and infrastructure. The earthquake is particularly notable for the suffering that it caused to remote mountain communities due to landslides and rock-fall. The earthquake also caused significant damage to unreinforced masonry, and historic structures and temples. This seminar presents a summary of the observations made on this reconnaissance mission and the implications for this and other vulnerable regions. It will present elements of the seismicity of the area, the damage to buildings and other structures and the impact on remote mountain communities of the earthquake and subsequent landslides.
