El Salvador is located in an active seismic region produced by the subduction of the Cocos plate under the Caribbean Plate; as a consequence of this interaction, there is local seismicity, within the country, as well as active volcanoes. The earthquakes produced by local faulting have produced the highest losses in terms of human lives, most of which had their foci close to the Metropolitan Area of San Salvador (AMSS by its acronym in Spanish) where the highest concentration of population of the country is. Santa Tecla has been identified as one of the most critical areas in the AMSS in terms of seismic risk. The main objective of the research is to quantify the structural vulnerability and exposure, comprising buildings and population, related to the seismic risk in that city. It is undoubtedly the first time that concise information has been developed to perform a detailed seismic risk assessment of a Salvadoran urban area.
