Episode 1 - Mark Scorer, on the SARAID Search & Rescue deployment to Turkey in 2023
November 2023 - Hosts: Evangelos Yfantidis, Filip Zinkiewicz
In February 2023, a series of devastating earthquakes and aftershocks took place in the border region of Turkey and Syria resulting in numerous civilian casualties and substantial structural damages. Mark Scorer, Chief Engineer at AtkinsRéalis and elected member of the main SECED Committee, was the Deputy Team Leader for the SARAID (Search and Rescue Assistance in Disasters) rescue team deployed into the disaster zone after an international appeal for help. SARAID was founded in 2003 and is a British charity that specialises in Urban Search and Rescue (USAR) post-disaster, humanitarian relief and community resilience preparedness worldwide. The team consists of people from all walks of life including the emergency services, engineers, construction industry and many more. The team train for one weekend each month and have multiple exercises throughout the year on specialisms such as technical search, engineering relating to collapsed building rescue, breaking and breaching, propping and shoring, rope rescue, logistics, and communications.
In our very first podcast episode, Mark, who is now the Operations Director for the Charity, shares his personal experience from the rescue mission. He provides a fascinating insight into the logistics of potentially dangerous deployments to disaster zones across the world and describes how Civil Engineering skills and expertise can assist in the field. We also discuss how we can implement positive changes that can improve the resilience of structures against similar natural disasters, so that we can ultimately protect human lives and properties.
