SECED Young Members

SECED Young Members

The SECED Young Members are an informal grouping of students, researchers and professionals under the age of 35 within SECED. If you satisfy one of the following general criteria you automatically qualify as a Young Member:

  • Be a member of SECED with an age of under 35 years old on the 1st January of the current year; or
  • Be a student member of SECED (regardless of age).

This group is inclusive; SECED members of all ages and backgrounds are encouraged to participate in events organised under the "Young Members" umbrella.

Join SECED as a Young Member

Joining SECED as a Young Member is straightforward. Simply apply for a SECED membership (remember, membership is free to all students). If you meet the general criteria listed above, you will automatically be enrolled as a Young Member of the Society.

Benefits of the SECED Young Members

Young SECED Members enjoy all the usual benefits offered by the SECED membership. In addition to those you will:

  • Be able to vote in elections of the Young Members Sub-Committee (YMSC) - see next section for more details about this committee.
  • Stand as a candidate for an elected position in the YMSC**.
  • Connect with peers who share your passion for earthquake engineering and related fields.

** If appropriate, an early career member of SECED who does not meet the general criteria for being a Young Member but who has applied to the YMSC, may be accepted if agreed in a vote of the YMSC.

The Young Members Sub-Committee (YMSC)

Young Members are represented within the SECED by the Young Members’ Sub-Committee (YMSC). Formed in July 2017, the YMSC aims to provide a platform to showcase the talent of young members to the wider community, promote collaboration among students and young professionals, enhance knowledge in the fields of earthquake engineering and civil engineering dynamics, and share ideas and concerns with the Society. The YMSC is intended as a diverse group that brings together talented individuals from both academia and industry. The remit of YMSC encompasses activities such as:

  • Organising career development/networking events,
  • Co-ordinating outreach/educational programmes,
  • Arranging periodic meetings, conferences, paper/poster competitions and special presentations,
  • Collaborating with other professional societies,
  • Interacting with the main SECED Committee to enhance the overall presence and standing of the Society; and organising other activities in pursuance of the objectives of the Society.

The Annual Meeting of the YMSC is held in October. Committee members are elected for a two year term.
