Seismic Symphony: Hidden Structures with Unseen Innovations Developed in East Asia

Synopsis

As urban areas expand, the use of underground space is becoming increasingly vital for accommodating the needs of densely populated cities. This webinar will feature expert presentations showcasing innovative approaches to seismic design. Topics will include the numerical analysis of underground stations under earthquake loads, comparing pseudo static and dynamic time history analysis methods, and the seismic design of the diving pool (C40+ project), highlighting innovative techniques and challenges. Additionally, an overview of the region & seismic design developments will be provided, offering insights into the latest advancements and future directions. Ensuring the resilience of underground structures against earthquakes is crucial for public safety and the continuity of essential services. Engage in live Q&A sessions, a panel discussion, and interactive audience polls.

About the speakers

Honest Tang is a seasoned engineer specializing in geotechnical and seismic engineering, with over twelve years of experience. As a Senior Engineer at Arup Hong Kong, he has played a pivotal role in advancing seismic engineering practices, significantly enhancing the safety and resilience of infrastructure in seismically active regions. His expertise spans deep basement excavations, deep foundations, rock face stabilization, natural terrain studies, and site formation projects for MTR developments and private sector initiatives.

Honest has been involved in various seismic design projects, including the seismic stability assessment of impounding reservoirs in Hong Kong and the seismic design for offshore wind foundations in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. Additionally, he has made significant contributions to drafting Hong Kong’s first seismic code of practice, further solidifying his impact on the field.

Saad Faizi is an award-winning engineer with over six years of experience in geotechnical and seismic engineering. Saad has contributed significantly to advancing geo-seismic engineering practices across East Asia, enhancing the safety and resilience of infrastructure in seismically active regions. His expertise encompasses offshore foundation and cable routing, seismic design, slope upgrading, excavation and lateral support, deep foundation design, site investigation, and site formation.

Saad has been involved in various seismic design projects, including the seismic-resistant design standards for buildings in Hong Kong and the seismic design for offshore wind foundations in Japan, South Korea, and Taiwan. Additionally, he has helped in drafting Hong Kong’s first seismic code of practice, further solidifying his impact on the field.

Yao Wang is a geotechnical engineer with over five years of experience in geotechnical design and technical consulting, specializing in numerical modelling. He has a strong background in geotechnical and structural engineering, with expertise in foundation design, site stability analysis, finite element analysis, seismic design, and numerical modelling.

Since joining ARUP in 2020, Yao has contributed to various large-scale projects, including the Suzhou East Station TOD Project, Hangzhou Jiande C40+ Deep Diving Club Project, and Shanghai HZM Project. His work often involves foundation design, site investigation, and technical consulting services, ensuring structural integrity in seismic conditions. Yao's project portfolio spans multiple cities in China, such as Shanghai, Hangzhou, Wuhan, and Taiyuan. He holds a Master of Science in Civil Engineering from Delft University of Technology and has published research on geotechnical engineering topics, making him a versatile and valuable asset in the field.
