Seismic design for offshore wind turbine foundations

Synopsis

As offshore wind energy rapidly expands across Southeast Asia - including South Korea, Taiwan, Japan, Vietnam, and China - understanding how seismic activity affects turbine foundations in these regions is more important than ever.

In this fascinating online talk, Professor Gopal Madabhushi will explore the effects of seismic loading on popular foundations options types like monopiles and jackets supported on pin piles.

Drawing on the current DNV (Det Norske Veritas) guidelines and dynamic centrifuge modelling, he’ll reveal how combined seismic and operational loads influence foundation performance, rotation, and settlement - plus insights into soil liquefaction and windward vs. leeward soil behaviour.

A must-attend for anyone interested in resilient, global offshore wind design.

About the speaker

Professor Gopal Madabhushi is a professor of civil engineering in the department of engineering at the University of Cambridge. He is the head of the geotechnical and environmental research group and the director of the Schofield Centre.
Professor Gopal Madabhushi is an international expert on earthquake geotechnics, developing unique experimental modelling facilities at Cambridge. His research has led to better understanding of earthquake effects on soils and structures, especially seismic liquefaction, through three textbooks and over 500 journal papers and conference papers. He has received the Institution of Civil Engineers T.K.Hsieh Award three times, its Bill Curtin Medal, and the British Geotechnical Association Medal. He is a longstanding member of the Society of Earthquakes and Civil Engineering Dynamics (SECED).
