The sequence of two major earthquakes in Kumamoto (14th and 16th April 2016) has caused significant damage and disruption to the Kumamoto region of Kyushu, Japan. The intense ground shaking and displacement as well as triggered landslides caused severe earthquake damage to a wide range of buildings and infrastructure in Maishiki and Minami Aso areas. Major destruction of roads, bridges, and tunnels was caused. This seminar presents a summary of the observations made on this reconnaissance mission and the implications for this and other vulnerable regions. It will present elements of the seismicity of the area, the damage to buildings and other structures and the impact on urban and rural communities due to the earthquakes and subsequent landslides.
