Becoming Chartered with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE): Advice from newly qualified engineers

Synopsis

The SECED Young Members Sub-Committee (YMSC) has invited Stamatina Marinatou (AtkinsRéalis), Francesco Morfuni (newcleo) and Daniel Gilmore (Sellafield Ltd) to provide guidance on how to become a Chartered Engineer (CEng) with the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE).

Drawing from their recent personal experience in achieving CEng status through the Initial Professional Development (IPD) route, they will provide an overview of the process whilst covering the following main topics:

  1. Completing IPD online.
  2. Professional Review report writing & submission.
  3. Professional Review interview and communication task.

About the speakers

Stamatina Marinatou

Stamatina is a Senior Geotechnical Engineer at AtkinsRéalis. She is experienced in delivering geotechnical and seismic packages of work for a range of sectors, including Nuclear. Her work ranges from geotechnical desk studies to advanced numerical modelling for soil-structure-interaction problems. She was a member of the SECED YMSC since 2018 and served as Chair during 2021-2022.

Francesco Morfuni

Francesco is a Chartered Civil Engineer and Committee Member of SECED, with an MEng in Civil Engineering from Sapienza University of Rome and an MSc in Earthquake Engineering with Disaster Management from the University College of London. He is a Senior Engineer in newcleo, contributing to the development of the Gen-IV nuclear lead-cooled fast reactors. His expertise lies in the fields of Structural and Earthquake Engineering, having worked for several nuclear new-build projects, including Hinkley Point C and Rolls Royce SMR.

Daniel Gilmore

Daniel is a chartered Civil and Structural engineer working for Sellafield Ltd which presents one of the most significant environmental remediation challenges in Europe. He is currently working in the structural analysis team and provides technical expert support to project teams. He is also responsible for the development of new methods for seismic, impact, and Soil-Structure-Interaction (SSI) analyses.
